Ride leaders have 3 Levels of certification through NICA:


Level 1 Coaches can ride with, but not lead ride groups.

Level 2 Coaches can ride at the front of a group.

Level 3 Coaches can be be Assistant Coaches or Head Coaches.

NICA COACH REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 1ST!



  • Be 18+ years old

  • Register at the NICA Pit Zone, $25 fee reimbursable once you reach level 2 (make sure you are signed in as you, not your racer)

  • Fill out participation agreement in the pitzone

  • Complete background check

  • In the Pitzone, click on “Coach Profile” to see remaining requirements, then “Courses, Resources & Benefits” to complete the required courses.

  • Complete Concussion Training, upload your certificate to pitzone

  • Watch Risk Management level 1, take the quiz

  • Complete Athlete Abuse Training, available in coach courses (expires after 2 years)

  • Watch NICA student-athlete coaching philosophy for 2024 and complete quiz

  • Logon to the Pit Zone to check the status of your certifications.



  • Be 21+ years old

  • Complete all of Level 1 requirements. Annual renewal needed for:

    • Concussion training

    • Background check

    • Participation agreement and Coach license in the pitzone

    • Risk Management 1 and 2

    • NICA student-athlete coaching philosophy

  • Watch Risk Management 2, take the quiz.

  • First Aid/ CPR

    Class dates and times TBD Sign up

  • Do 20 hours+ of field work

  • Complete Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as required.

  • Logon to the Pitzone to check the status of your certifications.



  • Be 21+ years old

  • Complete all of the level 2 requirements.

  • Watch Risk Management 3, take the quiz.

  • Complete NICA approved Wilderness First Aid or Equivalent

  • Take Level 3 Exam

  • Do 80 hours of field work

  • Participate in NICA Leaders Summit

  • Get CEU Credits

  • Logon to the pitzone to check the status of your certifications.
